Abstract: Objective To understand the association between metabolic syndrome (MS) and white blood cell count (WBC) in young and middle-aged men in steel industry in Guangzhou. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 4 241 employees who worked at 16 units of some steel group in 2009 in Guangzhou were selected by the cluster random sampling for questionnaire survey and physical examination, including 3 760 males, and they were (38.400±10.258) years old. According to the WBC, they were divided into 3 groups[WBC(3.40~5.70)×109/L:1 162 persons, (>5.70~6.90)×109/L:1 196 persons, >6.90×109/L:1 402 persons]. The correlation analysis was used to study the correlation between WBC and MS-related components. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the change of MS prevalence as the WBC increased. Results The multivariate logistic regression results showed that after adjusting age, smoking, drinking, and other factors, as the WBC increased, the risk of MS increased. Compared with the lowest value of WBC, the OR values of the second and third groups were 1.88 and 2.58, respectively, with a statistical difference (P<0.05). Conclusion WBC increases in the metabolic syndrome and metabolic abnormal groups of young and middle-aged male steel workers in Guangzhou, and may be an independent risk factor for MS.
